June 22, 2016 -- (San Miguel County, CO) – San Miguel County Sheriff Bill Masters is issuing a temporary order enacting Stage 1 restrictions effective noon today (Wednesday) for the Egnar/Slickrock Fire Protection District.

The order was made at the request of Egnar Fire District Assistant Chief Scott Hemphill and affects private land only. The BLM is considering enacting Stage 1 restrictions next week on public lands in the southwest district.

This temporary order is in effect for 14 days. The county attorney advised if the restrictions need to be extended, the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) can extend the order after the temporary ban has been in effect for ten days. The next BOCC meeting at which the board can consider extending this temporary fire restriction is scheduled for June 29th in Norwood.

Sheriff Masters said the request for the order is reasonable and necessary. “The region is experiencing extremely dry conditions and has all conditions brewing for a wildfire. We need to be smart and proactive to help prevent this from happening.”

Under Stage 1 fire restrictions, the following acts are prohibited:
- Building, maintaining, attending, or using a fire, campfire or stove fire except within a permanent constructed fire grate in a developed campground, developed recreation site, or improved site.
- Smoking, except within an enclosed vehicle or building, a developed recreation site, or while stopped in an area at least three feet in diameter that is barren or cleared of all flammable materials.
