Next Saturday marks the beginning of the SMB Fair and Rodeo, and the Fair Board would like to invite the community to both attend and participate. Open fair entry forms are now available at the CSU Extension office in Norwood, and it is a great way to show off your artistic, culinary, or agricultural talents. Categories include Horticulture/Floriculture, Culinary, Fiber Arts, and Fine Arts, among others, and anyone with a San Miguel or West Montrose County address can enter. Attending the fair is also a great way to keep our agricultural roots alive by supporting our local 4-H youth, and the Fair Board is proud to announce the return of the 4-H horse show this year. The board writes:
It is our honor to organize one of the community’s greatest, long‐ standing, historical traditions—The San Miguel Basin Fair. When we think of our county fair, we often think of our community and its importance. Community is the backbone holding people together, cultivating support and the ability to overcome adversity. We would like to cordially invite you to take part in our community and attend the ….annual San Miguel Basin Fair. Please join us July 15‐23 to recognize, appreciate and marvel at the toils of our local youth, agriculturalists and artisans. 2017 has brought several changes to the organization of the fair. This year we are excited to bring back the youth 4‐H horse show. Also, we have seen an increase in 4‐H livestock participation. We are excited more local youth are eagerly learning about animal production. Market beef numbers have nearly doubled and there are several breeding beef, sheep and goat projects. Though some aspects of the fair are flourishing, we have seen a decline in other areas. Over the last few years the open fair participation has stagnated. We would like to encourage the community to take part in our open fair. Please see the open fair section of the fair book for a complete listing of possible entries. Lastly, we would also like to thank the numerous volunteers and donors that have put forth the time and money necessary to make the SMB Fair possible. Without the generous support of the community, the fair would not be possible.
Sincerely,
The San Miguel Basin Fair Board
