Local Colorado Master Gardener Program

 (Norwood, Colo.)

We are pleased to announce that we will be offering the 2018 San Miguel Basin Colorado Master Gardener Course in Placerville at the Placerville Schoolhouse.  The Master Gardener Certification and Volunteer Program is a well-known, nationally-respected gardening course and volunteer program.  Our local course is tailored to mountain and high desert gardening conditions.  Classes begin Thursday January 26 and continue weekly through April 6.

Topics covered in the course are Basic Botany, Soils, Mountain Gardening, Season Extension, Vegetables, Small Fruits, Trees and Shrubs, Herbaceous Plants, Fruit Tree Pruning, Insect Identification, Diagnostics and Pest and Weed Management.  Almost all of the classes will delivered through live in-person instructors and the remaining classes are delivered through live video streaming or online video presentations done at home before attended class.    Using these different modes of class delivery allows Colorado State University Extension to deliver classes locally without the need for extensive student or instructor travel.

Upon completion of 80% of the classes and 50 hours of volunteer service, trainees will receive certification as Colorado Master Gardeners.  Trainees complete their volunteer hours by working as volunteer staff with our local Extension office on various projects that will allow them to share their horticultural expertise and to promote research-based gardening practices in our area.  The cost for this option is $175.  Scholarships are available.  If participants choose to waive the 50 hour volunteer commitment and to participate only in the training portion of the program, they will not receive certification as “Colorado Master Gardeners”, but will instead receive a Colorado Gardener Certificate. This option is available for $530.

In-depth information, including applications, is posted on our website at http://sanmiguel.colostate.edu/   You can also call us at 327-4393 or come by our office across from the San Miguel County Fairgrounds.  We would like all applications for the volunteer track by December 16 in order to process and interview.

If you have a disability for which you seek an accommodation, please notify us (who, specifically, with contact information, and so many days prior to the event.
