San Miguel County Confronts Mental Health Stigma Head-On

San Miguel County has partnered with the Tri-County Health Network to bring Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) classes to its employees and to the community. These classes teach participants how to spot the symptoms of a mental health disorder and to recognize the early warning signs of a possible impending emotional or behavioral crisis. They also allow participants to have an open and honest conversation about mental health in an effort to combat the stigma surrounding this difficult topic.

By offering this course to employees, San Miguel County hopes to shed light on both the most common mental health conditions and the tools available to combat them. The Public Health Department hopes to have all county employees trained by the end of 2018.

Mental Health First Aid courses at the county are free and open to the public. There will be a course on Wednesday, May 23rd from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and another on June 7th and 8th from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (one class broken up over two mornings). Please contact Sara McKee at 970-728-4289 or saram@sanmiguelcountyco.gov if you are interested in registering.

You can also contact the Tri-County Health Network to schedule a class for your own organization. Please contact Paul Reich at 970-708-7096 or info@tchnetwork.org for more information.

Millions of Americans live with some sort of a mental health condition such as depression, anxiety, substance abuse, behavioral disorders, or disorders in which psychosis may occur. For many people, shame, fear, or guilt keep them from seeking the help they need. The Tri-County Health Network and the Center for Mental Health are hoping to change that by offering support, education, and other resources to the community.
