April 3, 2019 -- (Telluride, CO) – The Colorado Department of Local Affairs (DOLA) has awarded San Miguel County a $1,000,000 grant to allow for the construction of the Norwood Sheriff’s Office Annex project. Construction will begin late summer and funding will come from this DOLA grant and San Miguel County reserve funds.

The building is being designed to meet the needs of the county for the next 50+ years and includes an emergency operations center/meeting room, expanded administrative/deputy office space, evidence storage, and suspect and witness interview rooms.

“We appreciate DOLA and their consideration and award of the grant to allow us to grow as the needs of our county grow,” District 3 Commissioner Kris Holstrom said.

The Sheriff’s Ilium office will also be expanded in a two-phase project funded by an existing DOLA grant and matching county reserve funds. Phase One will begin this year with jail renovations to create two protective custody cells and a storage addition.

Once the Norwood Annex new evidence room is complete, Phase Two for the Ilium facility will begin. This will include renovations to the lower floor of the Ilium office to create a much-needed expansion for deputy workspace and additional office space while evidence moves off-site to Norwood. The construction projects will be managed by Jennifer Dinsmore, the Sheriff’s Office Chief Administrative Officer, and the architect team from Charles Cunniffe Architects of Aspen.

“We’ve been able to carefully and thoroughly examine our short and long term projected growth and needs to best serve our county and are pleased to begin the project,” Sheriff Bill Masters said.
